This review is from: Naive: Modernism and Folklore in Contemporary Graphic Design (Paperback) It's 176 pages are loaded with beautiful and contemporary illustrations ranging from textiles and stationary to poster art and book covers. The editors did an impeccable job at selecting the artwork to go into this book because every page is inspiring, vibrant and shows a variety of modern artistic techniques. The artists chosen to be represented in this book are of high caliber, and their work speaks for itself. Some of the artists represented are: Helen Dardik, Matte Stephens, Jenn Ski, Hanna Werning, Public Domain & James Gulliver Hancock. The only text in this book are captions at the bottom of each page giving credit to the artist who's work is being shown. I highly recommend this book, as it's one of the most well done inspiration pieces I've seen in a long time. We usually purchase books after holding and seeing them in person, but thru a leap of luck I decided to get this without a preview! We have a collection of very cool wonderful art and design books...and this one jumped to one of our favorites. It has a nice size and weight and printed on well selected paper but the highlight for us is the images. The collection in this book is lovely. Each artist selected fits together perfectly with the next...colors and graphics seem to jump from the page. A must for every contemporary designer/ design appreciator! The images are fairly good all around throughout the book as well. My only problem with the book is the lack of content. There's about 5 pages of text tops. Don't get me wrong I love the images too but I was using this as a source for my dissertation that was on the values of letterpress in graphic design and was hoping this book would have been more helpful. A wonderful resource for ideas, and for the technical reader too. My only complaint, and it may seem minor, is that there seems to have been little or no editing of the texts. A good editor not only strengthens the language of a book, they also solidify (sometimes) the idea of the book. In the case of this book, the thesis seems to be nothing more than to showcase great work, without much in the way of contextualization. Still, as a printer and a designer, I'm happy to have it in my library. Question by Chuwariwap: The Perfect Graphic Design Laptop?
I’m a full-time graphic designer and I’m having a hard time deciding which is the best laptop for my profession. Most of my friends keep telling me that I should go with a Mac (because according to them, the industry just calls for it), but the problem is, I really love the flexibility of a Windows OS to different kinds of third party design software.

The major disadvantage of a PC is of course… viruses, while I hear rumors that Adobe Software such as Photoshop, Indesign, or Illustrator consumes more RAM on a Mac Platform.

What should I get? If you think I should go with a PC, is there one out there that perfectly meets the “Graphic Design” requirement?

Oh I almost forgot! I also do 3D modeling on the side – but it’s not that necessary anyway.

Well you can always get a mac and just do a dual boot so you can use both operating systems.

That's not the case with this book. I highly recommend the book to anyone who works in any kind of creative/freelance setting. Cameron Foote really gets to the heart of the details of creative business. Most books like this take a 10,000 foot view of all the issues. I end up being frustrated with not really learning tactics, just strategies. With this book, even the generic business issues are dealt with in a way that's relevant to creative/freelance businesses. When I first got the book I skipped to the chapter on how to go after the right business. I then read the chapters on how to make money in the business. After those chapters I realized there wasn't anything in the book I wanted to skip. I wound up reading the whole book back to back (and for a business book that's a big compliment--at least coming from me). This may sound like a glowing review--that's because it is. I was very impressed with the level of detail and relevancy the book has to what I wanted to know. I found a few mistakes I was making with the way I was running my own business. I used the tips Foote gave and improved the issues immediately. One last reason you might consider this book--in the Appendix there's a ton of helpful resources. Not only that, if you log on to the author's website, you can find about two times the forms found in the book. I wound up using 3 forms the author gives away on a daily basis. If it was re-titled "The Complete Guide to STARTING a Small Graphic Design or Communications Business" then I would probably give it a 5-star rating for readers based in the USA and a 4-star for those elsewhere. If you are in position where you are considering starting up your own business or going it alone as a freelancer then this book contains a lot of valuable information and good advice and I would highly recommend reading it before you go any further. Those outside the USA should be aware that some sections of the book will not be relevant (for example those focusing on company registration procedures and tax issues) as they are based on US law and regulations -but there is still a lot of other good advice. I would estimate that around 3/4ths of the book focuses on pre start-up and start-up issues so, if like me, you are currently running your own business then much of the content is already redundant and, while the remaining content is informative, this does limit the overall usefullness of the book. Question by ko yo: BA/BFA in Graphic Arts vs BFA in Arts in concentration of Graphic Design…..?
I need to know something that’s really important… I am in a bundle over my degree, and can’t seem to understand.

I want to be a Graphic Arts Designer, or something helpful in character designing and whatnot, and don’t know if firms will hire me if I choose University of Iowa, which only allows “BA in Arts in the concentration of Graphic Design” The community is better than the other school, and cheaper.

But the other school is more liable it seems in Iowa State University, with a BA in Graphic Design. In Iowa, it’s the city pertaining more towards Architecture and sciences, while Iowa University is more known for its Medicine, Law, and Writing. Ames Iowa (Iowa State University) was always said to be very empty in communications, unlike the partier city in Iowa City (University of Iowa). And can be frustrating to live rurally and studying sometimes….

So I am confused, but it seems to be in my area if I go for Iowa State University with both BA and BFA for Graphic Design. Since having a “BA/BFA in Arts in concentration of Graphic Design” in Iowa City sound way too cheesy and bad for my record why I waiting so long to finish.

I’m African American and love diversity to the fullest btw.

It’s nearly 5 AM, being searching and simply have a headache and “type fever lol” (sorry for the long text and possible repeated sentences )

Milton Glaser means to the history of graphic design what Michelangelo or Arcimboldo or Leonardo mean to the history of art. In a time when the likes of David Carson or any of the trendy computer BS designers reign, discovering Milton Glaser should be like a breath of fresh air. He represents a rare breed (almost extinct) of designers who master the craft of casting a good idea with the appropiate "visual language" in order to get the message across. His illustration skills as well as his thinking are always on the crest of the wave, regardless of who is "en vogue" at the time. He stands for excellency in the widest sense of the word. No designer who prides himself/herself of being one, should continue practising/studying without -at least- flipping through this book. The book's content is graphic material, both published and rejected, complemented by Glaser's succinct explanations concerning any of the following: historic/social context, guiding professional principles, technique and process, interpretation, the tension between client and creator, etc. The text and the graphical works are very diverse, ranging from terse to lengthy, and simple to complex, respectively. All in all, the feeling of being in Glaser's presence (in class or studio) is likely to grow in you as you progress through the book. If what you've read so far compels you to get the book, do so by all means, it's a 5-star! Otherwise, if, let's say, you are looking for for something akin to a cafe-table book, this one gets only 3 to 4 stars. Question by Sunshine Beth: Art School (Graphic Design)- Does Accreditation Matter?
I am changing careers from Higher Ed Admin to Graphic Design. My BA and MA are from a State University with Regional Accreditation. I am currently deciding which Art School to attend and I’m confused by all the different accrediting bodies. Some of the schools are regionally accredited, but those are mostly state schools with Graphic Design degrees within an Art Department, and I really would rather go through an Art/Design School. Some of the Art Schools I’ve looked at are accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independant Colleges and Schools (ACICS), and some of them are accredited by National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), and then some are accredited by both. I have noticed that some job postings say “Accredited BFA in Graphic Design” but I’m not sure what is considered accredited?? Please help.

Accreditation ALWAYS matters!!! Especially if you ever want to get your MBA or take classes elsewhere, accreditation will help you do that.
