Real Time Journalism in Progress at MFP

I struggled whether or not I should put the word 'citizen' in front of journalism in the title, but screw it. It is journalism that's happening - call it whatever else you want. Anyway, I'm sorta back. Had some health issues that took me down for almost a week. My fever's starting to spike a little again, though, so maybe it's not over. Anyway, I'm catching up and missed a lot of email at Muncie Free Press. One was from a lady who wanted to tell a story about what's happening to her daughter. I'm helping her (now, currently, in real time on the site and via email) get the story on the site.

The qualities of a teacher are needed for stuff like this. I think it's going well, though. Interesting to note that the person found the site via word of mouth.

Might come back and leave comments / thoughts about this later, depending on how I feel.

And many thanks to Tom Regan for filling in for me at New Media World, which I will make it to one day (like my vow to get my own free copy of E&P print at The Star Press - although I didn't get my first copy until my last week there. Ah, the irony... ;)

Ok, catch-up sucks. Lots of good user submitted content being added at MFP, though.

publishing alleged child victim's name ++

first change was to title - added alleged.

it's a first person account from a mother of her child being abused while in care of her ex-husband. (so, i'm leaning of putting it in Ed/Op or Essay... maybe essay...)

lastly, for the moment, the use of the alleged victim's name - she's a baby. i don't want to use the name. the mother wants to use the name. grandmother doesn't. i don't think i will.

thoughts? help? anyone?

chatting with another MFP user

currently, talking about the 'story/essay'...

more MFP thoughts

i think i'm finally going to give in and add phpbb cloned forum on muncie free press. i've fought myself against doing it for a long time. people are used to the format, though. i'm still going to play up the main backend software on the homepage, but it might get people to move over to our site. drastic measures and all that. or maybe just an evolutionary step in this revolutionary process, quite organic in nature.

i really should tie the two user databases together, but i'm thinking about being lazy and not doing that. i mean, if nothing else, while on MFP within the 'forum' environment, i could talk and coax and teach them the 'other side' of the site (with nested comments and comment ratings...) that's the end goal, because if traffic gets large, i want the community policing itself for the most part...

</random thoughts>

we published it

finally as an essay. no reaction from the community yet, but a few people did get involved in getting the story out, which was cool...

more thoughts on community building...

it's amazing, but since installing the phpbb forum software (that they're accustomed to), they're coming over to MFP and posting a lot more. The 'main site' is still getting content/comments too, though. as i said, at least on the MFP forums, i'll be able to talk to them about the 'main site' and mission of Muncie Free Press. 22 members signed up in 4 days, with a couple hundred posts so far... looking good. looking good.

just got an email

...saying i'd be contacted by a lawyer soon about something one of MFP's users posted (the Lenice essay...) more as it comes in.
