Peek at Muncie Free Press Traffic
Peek at Muncie Free Press Traffic
Submitted by kpaul.mallasch on Wed, 04/26/2006 - 5:07pm.I've been out test-driving log analysis software (may look at the cheap on page tracking services too.) I'm using Awstats now, which is fine, but I want something a little more in depth. Anyway, since I'll be going over a couple hundred megs of traffic data, I thought I'd share some of it with you. Here's the first batch from a program called Mach5 Analyzer.
Stats are roughly from 12.30.05 to 4.26.06.

Overall, not too shabby, I think. Growth could be faster, but maybe it's better slower - simmering if you will. I also really like all that type-in traffic. Search engines haven't really 'kicked in' where they should be yet, imho, so a lot of the increases are from news of the site spreading word of mouth. They say this is the 'best' kind of marketing, don't they?
I may post more screencaps later. Not sure. It's Wednesday. ;)

Forum growth has been
a lot faster than 'main site' growth. i guess i have to admit i'm a little surprised at that.
forums were launched 4/2/06. here's a current snapshot of some of the stats:
that's about a third of the people who signed up for the 'main site.'
the thing is, i still believe i need the infrastructure of the 'main site' once we get to a large level. the forums, though, can't end up a 'ghetto area' on the site...
Question - Does Google treat big media websites differently?
What about other SE companies?
Looking through SERPs, I've been noticing a lot of thestarpress.com sub-domains taking up the first, second, third, fourth, etc. spots - not to mention the gannett.com and cars.com domains with thestarpress.com sub-domain. maybe this is too geeky of a thought for some of you, but other web companies have been spanked for jamming SERPs with domains one company owns.
maybe i'm just paranoid, though, and impatient with waiting to get some decent search engine traffic. it's been 7+ months, Google, come on! ;)
i've seen a shift the last several months (an increase), but nowhere near where i think it can/should be.
anther thing hurting me (i think) is the age of my domain. it's 2005 vintage, whereas thestarpress.com was bought in 1996, i think. therefore, i think Google and others might/may use how long the site has been around to determine its importance.
now, i know it's only a small sliver, but i think it's one that's stinging a little bit.
i'll wait, though. i know it will come eventually - in waves...
Trace Watch
Trace Watch seems pretty cool so far...
path analysis with Trace Watch
is very, very cool. if MFP ever has any money, we'll send it to the creator so he can flesh it out some more.
what i'm finding easy to see visually now is the stickiness of the forums. perhaps to the detriment of the 'main site' at the moment, but i'm gonna continue with both...
