The Star Press' Brand of Community Building
The Star Press' Brand of Community Building
Submitted by kpaul.mallasch on Sun, 04/23/2006 - 8:52pm.Heh. This comes a week or so after they booted me off their forums for telling people about my forums:
"Seems like I'm repeating myself alot these days. Knock it off or get off the site. There are other forums available in ECI.
Here's a thought. Someone go buy a domain and install a Center Township forum. I'll gladly transfer all the CTES threads to another domain if someone will have them?
Admin"
If this is a sign of their (and Gannett's) Citizen Journalism to come, I'm afraid.
Ok, I had one of my computers (the fast(er) laptop) go down last night. So, I ended up losing about 3 hours of work and having to work on a 500 mhz machine for our next slidecast. It's almost ready, though.
I have so many other things to do as well.
*sigh*
Anyone got an extra 'puter they could send me? ;)

In that respect, maybe MFP is
like America - Bring MFP your trolls, your trouble makers, your virtual masses.
heh.
gets better and better
this is the latest from my replacement at the TSP (one of them...)
Folks,
The CTES threads are gone. Keep them off of this site as I have become the target of hateful emails because I'm not "moderating properly".
Not being familiar with the situation, I do not know what is true and what is not, making it difficult to moderate "libelous comments" out of the forums. If you care to discuss this topic, find another forum to do it in. Future CTES threads will be immediately removed from the site.
Again, I apologize to those who have a valid interest in CTES but I am merely the webmaster and forums administrator. I cannot engage in pissing matches with every Tom, Dick or Harry who doesn't like what is being said here.
Thank you,
Eric Kinzie

heh. he swears even!
classic.
heh. now we have
Eric on MFP's forums explaining 'his side of the story' - Geez. It would be nice if I could do that on their site as well. ;)
This is nothing less than amazing
I have been wondering lately why most newspapers of small to mid-size circulation haven't plunged into interactive, online community journalism like they should, and now I think I understand why. And it's sad.
They have so completely cut themselves off from the public they serve that they don't even realize their own self-contradiction.
For print, they cover stories about issues, then solicit opinions, even if they're from people who don't have any direct involvement in the matter. And they'll let them say pretty much anything they want.
But they don't want to do that online. What gives? I'm sorry if this offends someone, but the tack this newspaper's online version has taken is not just non-journalistic, it's anti-journalistic.
Now, maybe they'll come back with a way to foster online discussions that avoid the problems the Webmaster discussed above.
But I have to ask questions: How bad were the problems in the first place? Online discussion threads have been around almost since the dawn of Internet time, so how did they not know that undesirable discussions were a possibility? And what did they consider undesirable and why?
They've opened themselves up to charges of censorship. And even if you sympathize with them, they deserve it.
Here you go, soonerboomer
from here ;)

Some of the TSP CTES people
are at MFP forums now. seems to be going civilized so far. people are even giving out (maybe) real names, which might help keep it that way.
keep sending the people/community my way, TSP. i appreciate it. ;)
