Three years ago, around this very same time, I sent out my declaration of independence from big media. I thought it was worth a smile, but I was also trying to send a serious message. Amidst the soaring newsprint prices and declining ad revenues, the media corporations have more to worry about.

Vanilla News and the Maginot Line of Objectivity
There's been a great discussion going via the Online-News mailing list. One of the messages that came over the wire tonight was particularly good, I thought, so I asked the author (Matt Mireles) if I could reprint here. He was nice enough to say yes. So, here is his email titled, Vanilla News and the Maginot Line of Objectivity
My Duty as a Journalist
I came across this piece at Poynter today and it really upset me. I posted a response in the comments, but there are other things I want to add.
Lauren Graham as Hildy in His Girl Friday remake?
You know, Lauren Graham would make a good actress for the role of Hildy in the 1940 version of His Girl Friday. She has that fast paced wit/banter down from doing Gilmore Girls for so many years.
Indy Star: We're Sorry
This is another thing that big media is getting wrong, imho.
The Inksniffer
Not sure who The Inksniffer [ed: link fixed...] is, but will be interesting to see this new anonymous blog start up. First few posts aren't bad. I noticed because I was linked under a heading of "Suspected Fellow Sniffers." Heh. Check it out. Tell them kpaul sent ya.

WaPo's Take on Armed and Famous
First off, for the record, I wasn't invited to participate in this media call. I'm still getting into 'loops of information' within various circles. (For the last one, I finally figured out they sent out everything via fax only. D'oh. So I got a toll-free online fax number and new sources of info start coming in. Fax! I'm grateful for the information, though.) In any case, The Washington Post has a good article about the conference call with Chief Joe Winkle, the producer of the show, and others.
I swear this is true
I won't say out loud here who's responsible, but here's the link. If you're too lazy to click (it is a pain, isn't it?), or if someone realized their error and fixed it, here's a sanitized version (names removed and their euphemisms parenthesized to protect the guilty):
The problem with Sundays (and Newspapers)
Steve Yelvington has a great post today that started life as an email to Poynter's Online News list.
