Listifieds: Two Guys With Some Spare Time

Greg Sterling noted recently that Listifieds was created by two guys in their spare time and puts a lot of big media's efforts (cars.com anyone?) to shame.

Why We Started Listifieds

For a couple of years we've been kicking around ideas for a community-based site for Bowling Green residents. We envisioned a place for residents to post ads, review local businesses, find things to do around town and communicate with each other online. After a while we realized that such a site could quickly take way too much time to operate. Since we both had full-time jobs, we didn't have a lot of time to spare. So we decided on a classified ads site. We've wanted to post ads locally and have been frustrated by the lack of good options, especially on the web. The available advertising options all suffer from several problems:

* They're too expensive. Posting an ad in the local newspaper or other print publications simply costs too much money.
* They have too many limitations. In our opinion, it seems unreasonable to expect anyone to present their item in a way that will entice people to buy it when you're restricted to 4 short lines of text and (maybe) one photo.
* They don't run long enough. Most items probably aren't going to sell over a weekend or in 8 days. They need more exposure time.

Seems pretty slick in appearance. Will it take off? Does it come down to effective marketing now? Luck?
